RVs are a lot of fun to own or rent. In recent years RVs have become highly engineered vehicles and so are the tires they roll on. Knowing how to properly care for and maintain your tires can improve the performance of your tires and your RV. Proper tire care will increase the likelihood you'll have a pleasing and safe RV experience.
The tire and automotive industry, as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), have long stressed the consumers' role in the routine care and maintenance of tires. That is the reason tires, including spare tires, should be inspected regularly.
It is important that you inspect your tires at least once a month and before each trip for proper inflation pressure and tread wear. It is also recommended you supplement this with recurring rotation and balancing. Some RVs may require alignment services when unusual tire wear patterns are noticed.
After you’ve driven on rugged, rocky terrain or when you take your RV in for service, it’s a good idea to have your tires inspected after you drive. A competent service person will check both sidewalls, the tread area, valves, caps and any valve extensions. Tires should be checked for nails, cuts, bulges, cracks and weathering, as well as objects lodged between the duals. The inside of your tires should also receive visual inspection for indications of over-deflection from overload conditions or under inflation.
